BREG

I chose the name Breg for many reasons. I am very interested in Celtic mytholgy and wanted to pick a name to reflect that. Breg is the old pagan name for Brigit(d) who was a patron of crafts including stonework. She is patron of wisdom and excellence which I strive for in every aspect of my life. Also her festival is Imbolc, the first day of Spring, which is a great day for me as it means Summer is on the way!! Following is a brief history taken from a few websites.

Brigid is known under many names and is a triple goddess. She is the daughter of The Dagda and the wife of Bres. She is the Fire of Inspiration and the patroness of poetry. She is the Fire of the Hearth and patroness of fertility and healing. She is the Fire of the Forge and the patroness of martial arts and smithcraft. She is the mother of craftsmen. The Lady of the Lake of Arthurian myth, who forged Excalibur, is associated with Brigid because of her fire and forgery. Like the Avalon, "Isle of Apples", of Arthurian legend, Brigid owned an apple orchard in the Otherworld, where bees went to collect magical nectar. Brigid means "one who exaults herself". She was Christianized as the foster-mother of Jesus and called St. Brigit. The festival of Imbolc is associated with her, when she brings Spring to the world. Because of her natural aspects, she is often considered the patroness of the Druids. In Eastern France, Brigid is known as Brigindo. In Scotland, she is known as Bride.

Brigid was the goddess of the Sacred Flame of Kildare and the patron goddess of the Druids. She was the goddess of all things perceived to be of relatively high dimensions such as high-rising flames, highlands, hill-forts and upland areas; and of activities and states conceived as psychologically lofty and elevated, such as wisdom, excellence, perfection, high intelligence, poetic eloquence, craftsmanship, healing ability, druidic knowledge and skill in warfare. She seems to have been the Celtic equivalent of the Roman Minerva and the Greek Athena (Encyclopedia Britannica: Celtic Religion), a goddesses with very similar functions and apparently embodying the same concept of 'elevated state', whether physical or psychological..

On February 1, Brigid is celebrated at the Gaelic festival of Imbolc, when she brings the first stirrings of spring to the land.
